Digital Library and Collections Hub

We are thrilled that you are interested in HSCC’s vast collections! The Society’s Digital Library and Collections Hub is word searchable.

The Society cares for extensive collections including thousands of artifacts, ranging from everyday household items and clothing to rare manuscripts and photographs. These items provide a tangible connection to the past, allowing visitors and researchers to explore the cultural, social, and economic development of Carroll County over the centuries.

We are particularly strong in its documentation of local industries, agricultural practices, and community life, offering a comprehensive overview of the county’s evolution. In addition to physical artifacts, the collection also encompasses a vast array of archival materials such as maps, letters, diaries, and official records. These documents are invaluable for genealogists, historians, and anyone interested in tracing the lineage and stories of Carroll County’s residents. By maintaining and showcasing these historical treasures, HSCC plays a crucial role in fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the county’s past.

Helpful Tips for Using the Hub

  • Try to enhance your search using keyword phrases such as Carriages and Taneytown or Carriages + Taneytown. Searching for a term in quotations can also help you find what you are looking for i.e. “Westminster Fire Department”.
  • Avoid overly broad search terms such as “tree” because the catalog will search for the word “tree” in every resource including hundreds of newspaper editions!
  • Be sure to click on the search result(s) thumbnail to see the item(s) in a larger viewing window.
  • If you see a mistake, please do let us know so we can correct the entry. Collections Manager Stephanie Eckard seckard@globalfreethinking.org can make the fix.
  • PDFs will soon be available for download (coming soon).
  • Please credit “From the Collections of The Historical Society of Carroll County, Maryland” when utilizing images for educational purposes. If utilizing for commercial purposes, email us at info@globalfreethinking.org for our fees chart and use form.
  • Interested in sponsoring a digital collection on the hub? Reach out to Executive Director Jason Illari jillari@globalfreethinking.org for more information.
  • Researchers looking for Carroll Yesteryears articles and the Carroll History Journal will find them on the Hub.
  • The Society’s Research Finding Aids (Bible Index, Military History Index, Carroll County Historic Sites, Family History Files, Crapster Papers, Microfilm & Newspaper Holdings, Vertical Files, Carroll County Times Archives direct link) are now word searchable on the Hub here.
  • Keep in mind that the vast majority of the Society’s 40,000 collections are not yet on the Hub. If you cannot find what you are looking for, consider filling out a Society research request online, visit our research library, or send us a message. We will be more than happy to assist you!
